Shopping trip here I come

On July 23, 2011, in Personal, Shopping, by

I need to pick up some boat covers this weekend but I am not sure where to get them from, I am very new to the boating world and so far have just had hand me downs from other people – this is the first item I have needed to buy and I don’t even know where to start, do they sell boating goods at places like Walmart or is it something I am better off buying online?

I go in Walmart all the time but I have never noticed a boating good section, but then I have never actually looked for one and I am the sort of person that only really sees what I am looking for. All the massive banners selling special offers and the like are usually lost on me as I just breeze straight passed them and hardly even take them in.

Ordering online seems to be the cheapest way with most things though, especially if you can find discount coupons or free shipping codes.

HondaMy favourite genre of TV show is definitely reality TV, but that passion is closely followed by my love of documentaries – documentaries are similar in that they involve following real people but have the added benefit that they actually educate me at the same time. As much as I love reality shows I do some times sit there watching two bimbos argue about the silliest things and wonder how many brain cells I am killing off by watching such dross ;)

Honda sponsors many of the Channel 4 documentaries that I tend to find myself drawn to – Coppers, 24 hours in A&E and One Born Every Minute being some of my recent favourites.

I also found myself intrigued by the new Honda idents between the advert breaks, The separate phases, created by Hollie Newton and Wieden + Kennedy, each feature a real life Honda owner in their very own mini documentary,  Each of the stories have related online content so you can find out more about them online.

AlpacasEach of the featured mini documentaries concentrate on some of the unique ways people use their Honda vehicles in their day to day lives. One of the stories follows a woman as she uses her Honda to help with the herding of her herd of Alpacas. Take a peek at the video below.

And interestingly if you think that you have an interesting story to share with W+K and indeed the whole of the UK, you can enter a competition at the online hub and one story will actually be chosen to be turned in to a full campaign.

What is SEO?

On June 2, 2011, in Internet, by

It isn’t surprising that there is a lot of discussion all around on SEO. As more and more of the economy shifts online, good SEO practices can make or break a business. Perhaps this is also what prompts businesses like JC Penny to use unethical SEO practices to try and game Google. It shouldn’t be surprising though – JC Penny got millions of dollars worth of shopping during the holiday season. The difference between first and second position in Google can be huge.

Which is why, you see so many techniques for SEO, “tricks” that will rank you higher in the search results. There are both the “WhiteHat” and “BlackHat” methods. Then there is the middle ground “GrayHat” methods. There are the ethical and unethical methods, there is manipulation, there is money, there is violation of Google Webmaster Guidelines. There is everything you can think of under the sun. Which is what makes ranking difficult.

It is a constant cat and mouse game between Google and webmasters. Google originally came up with PageRank, with the idea that it is not just about the keywords on the site (which is what earlier search engines used. Yea, there was a life for search engines before Google too!) but also how many other sites would like to link to it. In an ideal world, one would only link to a site if he felt the content valuable. However, in hindsight, it is easy to see how easily the system can be manipulated. What if people enter into “backroom” deals as link exchanges? Google was smart and reciprocal links aren’t as “valuable” today, so people started a “three-way link exchange”. Then of course there is the class of webmasters that buy and sell high PR ranks. There are a million things that can go on in the world of SEO.

And that brings me to the point of the article: what lies at the core, at the very heart of SEO? It is simply finding the best content. Period. It all boils down to providing value to the searcher. The way Google determines this might change from one day to another, but at the core, it is all about finding the best web pages, out of the more than trillion pages out there.

There are many tactics and strategies used by webmasters. One day it is backlinking through article marketing and another day it is blog and forum commenting. These tactics are fragile and they can change easily. After the Google Panda update, article directories were badly hit. This is in tune with Google’s idea of providing the best results to users. Without good search results, Google is dead.

So when you are building a site and want it to rank high in Google, you need to build high quality sites. This is at the heart of SEO. Read this article by Amit Singhal of Google and you will see why. Though he doesn’t go into the details, everything there has to do with content. Everything. There is no mention of linking at all in the checklist. Yes, backlinks can be very helpful but they are only a stepping stone towards what Google ultimately wants: Quality Content.

How To Lounge

On June 2, 2011, in Internet, by

I discovered a site called How To Lounge a few weeks ago and I only wish I had discovered it years ago! They offer guides on how to do…well…anything, if you want to know how to do it visit the site and there will be instructions – every thing from how to apply blusher to your face to How to make a Cat Tree for your favourite little moggy friend to spend the day having fun on.

If sites like this existed when I was growing up I think that I would be a much more capable adult than I am now – I am clumsy and useless and not at all domesticated but it’s because I was never taught how to do these things, so just had to make it up as I went along. Heck when I was growing up we didn’t even really have the Internet so you couldn’t just look things up as you can now!

How To Lounge also has a section for tips and tricks which offer shorter and quicker bursts of information that will help save you money, save you time, get your house cleaner, give you new recipes to try out and so much more.

Losing Weight

On June 2, 2011, in Weight Loss, by

I have been on a weight loss journey now for a number of years and I have always done it the old fashioned way, eating a healthy low calorie diet and working out daily – I have lost just shy of 100 pounds over the last three years which is a great achievement, but I have hardly lost anything at all in the last 8 months, my weight loss just seems to have completely stalled and no matter what I try to get things moving again nothing seems to work.

I have tried eating back burned calories, eating more, eating less, working out more, working out less, zig zagging my calories and every thing in between. I guess now might be the time to look at more extreme diets which I had previously wanted to avoid. I have been looking in to various ones online over the last few weeks trying to find one that is said to work but will also suit my lifestyle.

The next one I am considering is the HCG Weight Loss Diet, but I would not want to start it until after I have got back from vacation – we return on July 5th and I am sure that I will be ready to get stuck in then as I plan on gaining a pound or two on holiday, it’d be rude not to ;)
It works by decreasing the appetite and I could definitely do with the help in that respect, because although I have learned to make healthy choices and eat the right foods, I still eat too much of it as I have a huge appetite and could happily eat all day every day if I could get away with it :)

I am determined to get down to my goal weight, it’s only a few pounds away, but I won’t give up!

My husband has been a computer repair guy in his spare time for as long as I can remember, so when something goes wrong with either my main computer or laptop he usually has it fixed up (or in the bin) in no time. When we need new parts we always get them OEM as they are so much cheaper that way and all it means is that they don’t come in a pretty branded box and the like, and who cares about that once the part is inside your computer?

It had never really crossed my mind that you can get OEM Car Parts as well, but of course it makes sense and it’s something we happily discovered a few weeks ago when our car needed some work doing on it.

You can save some serious cash by buying OEM Auto Parts rather than paying the prices your dealer wants to charge and then if you are handy enough and have the know how you can fit them yourself, or simply pay a local mechanic to do the work for you.

Everyone is looking to save money in this current financial climate so any tips I can think of to share with you here I will do :)

Taking up horse riding again

On May 13, 2011, in Sports, by

We went shopping in Decathlon today and ended up spending a lot of time in the Equestrian clothing aisle pondering if I should take up riding again.

We went to look for swimming costumes, sandals and hats for our first ever holiday abroad at the end of June – it’s amazing just how much stuff the two of us need to buy, neither of us have been abroad and neither of us are really sun worshippers so when we do get some here the UK we tend to avoid it any way.

Any way as I say, while we were looking around we wandered down the equestrian aisle and I found myself remembering how much I used to enjoy riding as a girl – I used to go most weekends with my friends family and it was the highlight of my week. I stopped going after I got into an accident, it was nothing serious but it scared me a little and my parents didn’t want me to go any more so that was that. I’d almost forgotten that I used to go though and I have never really considered doing it as an adult until now.

As with any thing these days though I am sure it can be pretty expensive – what with having to take lessons, hire equipment and horses and of course kit yourself out in all the best gear. I will have a scout around online though for a good store that sells everything cheaply and take a look for somewhere local I can take some refresher lessons – they say you never forget how to ride a horse but it’s been so long I am not convinced, I can forget what I was doing 10 minutes ago never mind 18+ years ago.

It could end up being my favourite new hobby :)

I am so looking forward to the delivery we are expecting at work from 123 Print – we ordered new swanky business cards from them a few days ago and as I was put in charge of the design and style I feel a lot of pressure – everyone said they trusted my judgment though and I just went for something nice and simple, plain and with the company name and logo on it, so I feel like I can’t really have gone wrong.

I love getting new business cards, they always feel all fresh and new and lovely and I love being able to hand them out to people as it’s a great way to reconnect with old contacts as well as make many new ones.

I think they will be coming either tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest and I will be sure to let you know how they went down in the office once they get here :)

Distribute this!

On April 13, 2011, in Fitness, Work, by

I spent about 3 hours on the phone with a distribution center yesterday, that was fun – not! OK so perhaps I am exaggerating a little bit when I say 3 hours, it was more like 20 minutes but that’s still 20 minutes out of my day that I could have used to do much more interesting things – from relaxing in front of the TV, to cooking a nice dinner to working out.

The most annoying part is that it wasn’t even my issue – I popped into my husbands work place when I had finished my run, just to say hello and they were really busy so he asked me to phone them up ‘real quick’ and chase up an order they had placed a week earlier that was meant to have arrived by now. The lady I spoke to must have been new, or just got the job because the owners are her parents or something as she didn’t have a clue and didn’t seem to understand how the system worked.

Surfing Baby!

On April 13, 2011, in Fitness, Health, Weight Loss, by

I am going to need to hit up a surf shop directory so I can find local places to get surfing gear. I did it for the first time while on holiday a few weeks ago and have totally fallen in love with it – I can see why people become so obsessed with it and the waves take over their lives!

I am not very good at it of course, in my first session I only managed to get on my feet once and only lasted a few seconds before falling again – I am not known for my good balance that’s for sure. But I still enjoyed it and it was a real tough work out – my body was aching so bad the next day and I was out of breath the whole time. I bet I burned 800 calories in the hour and that’s a lot for me as I am very fit and already at the ‘correct’ weight for my height etc

Can’t wait to get out there again.
